Osteoporosis Australia (OA) marked World Osteoporosis Day with a ‘Calcium Breakfast’ at Federal Parliament House Canberra. The event was hosted by Maxine McKew (Patron and member of the IOF Roundtable) and speakers included OA ambassadors Mal Meninga (former national football captain) and Barbara Holborow (former Childrens Court Judge). The Health Minister, Senator Kay Patterson also attended the event and announced osteoporosis as the 7th National Health Priority under the title ‘Arthritis & Musckuloskeletal Diseases’. Osteoporosis Australia supplied ‘Bone Pins’ for all guests to wear at the launch. In the week leading up to the launch these pins were mailed to all members of parliament and attached to a card titled “Show some Spine”. The card explained the event and asked the receiver of the pin to wear it as a show of support for our important cause. The pins were very popular and were also distributed to state offices for use at local based WOD events and seminars. Many states hosted functions which state health ministers attended and they were presented with a copy of the ‘Call to Action’. The IOF WOD poster was used at the launch and also distributed to state offices to use at local functions and mail on the health care facilities.

Bulgaria
Association 'Women without Osteoporosis'
WOD’02 in Bulgaria reached thousands of people and showed serious cases of undiagnosed osteoporosis
The Bulgarian association "Women without Osteoporosis" organized a series of events for the occasion of WOD'02.
On October 15, 2002, a press conference of the association jointly with the Capital Hygiene Epidemiological Inspectorate was carried out. Attention was paid to the activities carried out by the association during the past year and the forthcoming demands on its part to the National Health-Insurance Bank concerning enhanced reimbursement of the medication and bone density examinations needed.
Ms Tamara Kovatcheva, Chairwoman of"Women without Osteoporosis" spoke on behalf of the association. Dr.med. Plamen Popivanov, expert advisor to the association, spoke before the journalists about the preparation of the National Program for prophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis. Dr.med. Masha Gavrailova, deputy director of the Capital Hygiene Epidemiological Inspectorate, spoke about the participation of Bulgaria in the WOD'02 theme "Invest in your bones". It was revealed that the specialists of the Inspectorate at their immediate work as methodologists of the school medical staff have many difficulties in realization of their activity because of unspecified joint programs between the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.
At the press conference the representatives of the Bulgarian Milk Company "LB Bulgaricum" Irina Shishkova and Kalinka Pashova were also present. They represented to the journalists their series of milk-products enriched with calcium. They had prepared a special surprise for the presentation - a beautiful musical clip of the company, in which their director Svetoslav Dimitrov was performing the sole singing part.
The press conference was widely reflected in the media and the participating specialists gave a series of interviews in the live transmissions next days.
The following event, devoted to October 20, 2002, was the opening of an exhibition for foods, food additives, auxiliary and measuring means, organized by the association "Women without Osteoporosis" together with the program "Health in air" of Bulgarian National Radio and the National Center of Hygiene, Medical Ecology and Nutrition (NCHMEN). At the opening on October 17, official persons from the Ministry of Health, many guests and journalists were present. For the first time, a fashion review of author's clothes for women with osteoporosis was demonstrated. The clothing, developed specially for the event, was created by the designer Veneta Atanassova in cooperation with "Women without Osteoporosis". During the three days of the exhibition, the companies "LB Bulgaricum", "Boyana Import Export",
"Schmidt N", "Neways" , "Advance Pharma" etc. represented their products to the public from all over the country. The visitors had the opportunity to be acquainted with useful bone health foods and additives, as well as to see sporting and measuring apparatus. During the exhibition, five devices for examination of bone density were working for members and guests of association "Women without Osteoporosis" – two of the type "DEXA" and three ultrasound ones.
The numerous interviews with participants, the direct transmissions and reportages on National TV, National Radio and dailies such as the newspaper "24 Hours", newspaper "Trud" etc. brought a lot of people from the whole country to the exhibition, which continued till October 19. The exclusive interest in the bone density examinations showed that still a very little part of Bulgarian population is covered from the measures for early detection of osteoporosis and the timely prophylaxis and treatment of the disease is affordable to only a limited number of people. For this reason, during the October 18th National Workshop for the leaders of sections and groups of association "Women without Osteoporosis" with one voice was taken the following decision:
The association "Women without Osteoporosis" is to address a petition to the National Health-Insurance Bank for:
- Increase of the existing reimbursement of the medicaments from 50% to 75%;
- Free treatment of patients having one or more osteoporotic fractures;
- Free osteometric measurement of the bone density of women over 60 years.
Bulgarian public appreciates highly the exclusive attention, with which the Presidency and the Council of Ministers behaved to the messages of European Community from the press conference on December 4, 2001, as well as the subsequent real steps for limitation of the disease on the part of the Ministry of Health and the National Health-Insurance Bank. However, because of the extremely low socioeconomic status of the population and the broad incidence of the risk factors (smoking, immobility, irregular nutrition etc.) further action is necessary.
The three-day events were completed with a patient meeting in the ceremonial hall of the National Center of Hygiene, Medical Ecology and Nutrition.
The celebration of WOD'02, organized from association "Women without Osteoporosis", was carried out by the kind support of the pharmaceutical company "MERCK SHARP & DOHME" as general sponsor and the National Center of Hygiene, Medical Ecology and Nutrition.

Mexican Committee for the Prevention of Osteoporosis (COMOP)
Celebración del Día Mundial de la Osteoporosis, 2002 en México
![]() |

World Osteoporosis Day 2002 in Palestine
Despite the prevailing and life threatening political conditions in Palestine which entail closures, curfews, shelling and siege imposed on the territories, POPS will celebrate WOD 2002 as it used to do every year and even with greater presence throughout Palestine.
POPS is planning a "One Minute Test" Campaign for one week starting on October 20, 2002. Three hundred volunteer field workers from the Union of Palestine Relief (UPMR), the largest and widely spread primary health care organization in the country, will complete the carbon-copy questionnaires for around 50000 women from all parts of the Palestinian territories including the Gaza strip. One copy will be given to the women and one will be kept by the POPS office for statistical analysis. All volunteer field workers will wear a uniform (sweat shirts and caps) while filling in the risk test in major city streets, villages as well as rural areas. The campaign will be announced in national and local media, two weeks before the beginning of the campaign .
The local partners in the campaign are the UPMRC and Vitamilk.
Statistical analysis of the campaign will be conducted later upon raising funds for it.

Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society
V Sloveniji imamo, upoštevaje že prej omenjena merila, okrog 200.000 bolnikov in bolnic z osteoporozo.
Le kako naj vas zdaj presenetim z necim novim?
Nevarnost spolnih hormonov
Osteoporozo znajo zdravniki danes sorazmerno dobro zdraviti. Na voljo je vec skupin zdravil. Ženski spolni hormoni so prva taka skupina.

Thailand's WOD activities
Thailand's World Osteoporosis Day activities were held during the annual meeting of the Thai Orthopaedic surgeons in Pattaya. The special WOD display and activities had a dual purpose: to increase awareness among the public and to heighten awareness ofthe orthopaedic surgeons who often do not realize their critical role in diagnosing and caring for osteoporosis patients.

The Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey (SEMT)
The Society of Endocrinology & Metabolism of Turkey's WOD information campaign
This year WOD activities are focused immediately before and after the 20 th of October. Prof. Dr. Tümay Sözen, head of the Osteoporosis Working Group of the Society of Endocrinology & Metabolism of Turkey, organized and facilitated a public conference to doctors and the Faculty Staff of the Health Center of the Middle East Tecnical University. Some 100 people attended the hour-long conference which was followed by an interactive question and answer session.
This was followed on the 18th of October by a similar conference to the Nursing Staff of the University Hospital. Other members of the society are also conducting seminars and conferences in
their University Hospitals as well. Nurses are considered a very good target group which might
play a very important role in enlightening the patient population ( not necessarily osteoporotic)when they contact them during normal nurse -patient
interrelations in the hospital.
On the 19th of October, another public conference will be given to women (about 300 in number )who were taught how to read and write by a civil voluntary organization and recently accomplished this task. These women live in slum areas of the city of Ankara. Then on the 21 th of october a public conference will be held for a similar population of women in
Van,which is a city located in the eastern part of
Turkey. Along with all these activities society members will make appearances or speeches on local or National TV Channels or radio broadcasts.
