Austria
Weekend recipe book offers new calcium-rich options to Austrians
World Osteoporosis Day activities in Austria organised by Aktion gesunde Knochen and the Dachverband der Österreichischen Osteoporose-Selbsthilfegruppen saw the introduction of new printed and audio-visual materials informing the public on the role of food and nutrition as key elements in the fight against osteoporosis. These include:
•a brand new folder on the importance of food and nutrition for healthy bones. People will be informed about: the disease osteoporosis; the risk factors; the importance of calcium and vitamin D in the diet; sources of calcium; the ‘for and against’ of milk products; and negative dietary factors and practices. A table on the different types of mineral waters shows the amount of calcium and sodium contained in each type. Another table shows the amount of calcium and phosphorus in different kinds of foods. And tips for optimizing calcium absorption are also given;
•a booklet with calcium-rich recipes to enjoy over a weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) including breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks per day;
•a CD with information about food and nutrition as a means to deal with osteoporosis.
On the weekend of 20 October, members of self-help groups all over Austria informed the public about food and nutrition in relation to osteoporosis. Most members worked in cooperation with supermarkets that offered milk products and calcium-rich foods, some sponsored by dairies. They gave out a nutrition folder and recipe booklet and answered questions concerning nutrition and bone health.
Many of the self help groups also organized speeches by osteoporosis experts, which took place around 20 October.

Brazilian Osteoporosis Patients Society (SOBRAPCO)
Gala dinner educated guests and raised funds for densitometry tests
With a view to World Osteoporosis Day, a positive message campaign informed the population about osteoporosis, prevention methods, diagnosis and treatment. Emphasis was put on aspects related to nutrition and the importance of a healthy diet for prevention and as a relevant treatment factor. The objective, besides informing the population, is to encourage healthier habits as well as taking action towards better health.
One of the key points of the campaign involved handing out brochures containing general information about osteoporosis and nutrition, and highlighting the benefits of a healthier diet. There will also be a list of food items rich in calcium and vitamin D, along with their respective calcium and vitamin D percentages per portion. The brochure provided readers with a compilation of recipes, some endorsed by the famous chef Roland Villard, and others, by our sponsors, including Roche, Novartis, Lilly, Nestlé, TetraPak, Sanofi-Aventis, Servier, Wyeth, Sofitel and McCann Erickson.
These brochures were distributed free to all SOBRAPCO members and to the general public. The initial print run was 10,000 copies.
A dinner event for 200 people on 24 October at Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Hotel officially launched World Osteoporosis Day. The dishes were prepared by Rolland Villard, head chef at the Hotel’s ‘Le Pre Catelan’ restaurant, and featured ingredients rich in calcium and vitamin D. Actress and SOBRAPCO patroness Irene Ravache attended the dinner, where guests were invited to take the IOF one-minute risk test. Proceeds from the evening went to financing bone densitometry tests, which are unavailable at public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, and which are most frequently requested by SOBRAPCO’s members.
Media outreach included a press release, announcements on the internet, TV and on the radio, as well as in magazines and newspapers.

Francophone Launch of WOD 2006 in Paris turns journalists into chefs to highlight nutrition’s essential role in building strong bones
Friday the 13th of October turned out to be a very auspicious date for IOF’s World Osteoporosis Day 2006 international francophone launch.
Journalists from a variety of healthcare and lifestyle publications were on hand for a press conference, held at the modern Karé Magique, that began with IOF President Professor Pierre Delmas briefing participants on the fact that after 50 years of age, one in three women and one in five men will suffer an osteoporotic fracture, an incidence higher than that of breast cancer and prostate cancer, respectively. Professor Delmas also discussed the huge economic burden the disease presents to many societies. Finishing on a positive note, he added that to a certain extent osteoporosis is preventable by building peak bone mass, and that it is easily diagnosed and treated.
Professeur Christian Roux, President of the Groupe de Recherche et d’Information sur l’Osteoporose (GRIO), one of the French national osteoporosis societies and a member of IOF, informed the press about the important role that a nutritious, balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D plays in helping prevent osteoporosis.
Also representing GRIO, Professor Thierry Thomas then mentioned that in keeping with WOD’s “Bone Appétit” theme of good nutrition: “in some thirty cities across France, conferences and workshops are concretely illustrating to the public the importance of nutrition, and particularly calcium, in helping prevent osteoporosis.”
Daniela Meyer, a member of IOF’s communication department, reviewed the international activities taking place worldwide for WOD and introduced the range of materials produced for IOF’s 173 national societies in 86 locations, including publications, posters, and a DVD of public service announcements by well-known celebrities and osteoporosis advocates.
Closing the conference segment of the day, master chef Martial Enguehard – Chef Martial to students of his renowned cooking school in Paris – reassured the audience that a bone-friendly diet can also be tantalizing and easy to prepare as well as nutritious.
A featured celebrity on IOF’s Public Service Announcements DVD, Chef Martial said he likes “to create menus that are healthy and balanced and that means considering their calcium and vitamin D content.” He suggested everyone should do the same in their kitchens, always taking pleasure in cooking, which he believes is the secret to a successful dish.
He invited the press to accompany him to a combined kitchen and dining area where they were invited to change roles from passive observer to active participant as co-chefs of a bone-friendly lunch. They found at their tables all the necessary tools, including bright orange aprons, lime-green or red kitchen scissors, sauce spoons, a cutting board, and a herbal centrepiece of potted basil, coriander, chives and flat parsley, as well as fresh lemons for seasoning and pistachios for garnish.
Chef Martial instructed the amateur chefs in preparing a starter of salmon parcels with vegetables and a Bulgarian yogurt sauce, and later, a dessert of fresh fig “transparence”. In between, they were treated to a main dish of red tuna steak with an emulsion of watercress and mascarpone, followed by some of France’s renowned cheeses. Along the way, the chef pinpointed the nutritional value of the fish and the dairy products used.
Wandering from table to table, Chef Martial jovially critiqued the efforts of the participants, who also took to critiquing each other. While the finished dishes varied in their degree of gastronomic polish, lessons learned about integrating simple products in easy-to-prepare recipes for a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, were readily absorbed by an appreciative audience.
Chef Martial is generously donating his recipes for the salmon parcels and fresh fig “transparence” to IOF and they are presently being added to the new recipe database available at: http://www.iofbonehealth.org/patients-public/about-osteoporosis/prevention/nutrition/calcium-recipes.html

Multi-faceted media campaign in Germany
'Strong bones through a healthy diet’ was the theme of a joint media relations campaign devised by the Kuratorium Knochen-Gesundheit and Tetra Pak, a Global Gold Sponsor, in the run-up to WOD 2006.
Far-reaching media activities using TV, radio and print, educated people about how to help prevent osteoporosis by leading an active lifestyle and sticking to a healthy diet, including dairy products. This message was reinforced using a combination of interesting data, facts on osteoporosis and handy hints.
Television: a spot was produced for the ‘Vita’ lifestyle program broadcast on some 20 stations with at least three reruns per station and an average audience of 2 million viewers. It told the story of a young businesswoman with poor eating and exercise habits who with the help of a nutritionist and personal trainer, had her lifestyle analyzed and improved. The spot profiled the widespread incidence of osteoporosis and how risk factors can be minimized.
Print – part one: a nationwide press release issued on 20 October featured a diagram showing the direct correlation between drinking milk and strong bones. It covered the causes, consequences, and prevention of osteoporosis and gave recent figures on the number of osteoporosis sufferers in Germany.
Print – part two: in cooperation with five regional dailies, an expert hotline was set up on 20 October providing callers toll-free access to nutritionists, fitness trainers and physicians. Partner media also published a report drawing attention to WOD and highlighting the number of osteoporosis sufferers in Germany. Handy hints encouraged prevention through exercise and a healthy diet. Several women’s magazines were also involved in this aspect of the campaign.
Radio: footage was distributed to some 190 private and public radio stations and made available on a press portal for downloading. It discussed the nature of the disease and its causes, profiled potential sufferers, discussed prevention, and provided handy hints for including calcium in the diet. Pedestrian surveys garnered public comments on awareness of osteoporosis and the importance of dairy products.

New Zealand
A ‘Bone Health Milk Crate Mission’ challenged Auckland residents
From 7am on World Osteoporosis Day, downtown Auckland was the site for much activity to mark the WOD awareness campaign.
A milk crate mountain (5m x 5m x 5m) was erected and the call went out for the New Zealand public to take part in the Bone Health Milk Crate Mission. The “call to action” was:
“Climb the milk crate mountain toward better bone health. Mark World Osteoporosis Day and help raise awareness by accepting the Bone Health Mountain Mission”.
The milk crate mountain (built according to strict health and safety regulations) was located in a high commuter traffic zone in Auckland in the hopes of capturing foot traffic from morning commuters and to keep the mountain on site until lunch time.
A wonderful spokeswoman, an osteoporosis sufferer in her mid-30s, talked about the disease and lifestyle measures she takes to manage the disease.
A myriad of celebrities were invited to participate. In addition, New Zealand’s leading radio station ‘Classic Hits’ broadcast live throughout the morning to drive people to the site to participate in the activity, as well as to communicate the health message. ‘Classic Hits’ has strong resonance with the female 18-39 market, and even stronger ratings with the 40+ female market and were perfect media partners for this event.
In addition, print media and television were invited to cover the event. The mountain climbing stunt itself, along with celebrity support, secured healthy coverage.

National Association Against Osteoporosis (APOROS)
'DELICIOSSO' cookbook features bone-healthy recipes
![]() |
| Cookbook: 'Delicious'- recipes for healthy bones |
DELICIOSSO – Recipes for healthy bones” is the name of the recipe book the National Association against Osteoporosis in Portugal (APOROS) launched on WOD 2006.
The idea for the title came from the words “delicioso”, Portuguese for “delicious” and “osso” the Portuguese word for “bone”. The result is delicious recipes for your bones.
To obtain the recipes APOROS invited 28 of the most prestigious Portuguese (or foreign but working in Portugal) chefs to create two calcium-rich recipes. Some well-known Portuguese women, who have ‘loaned’ their faces for previous osteoporosis campaigns were also invited to give us one of their favourite personal recipes for healthy bones.
The result is a high quality, extremely well illustrated book with more than 60 delicious recipes, from soups, starters and salads to main dishes and desserts, all with high calcium content and rich in ingredients from all the main food categories.
The book is prefaced by Prof. Isabel do Carmo, a well-known endocrinologist and writer of several books on nutrition and diets.
Parts of the IOF report “Bone Appetit” – The role of food and nutrition in building and maintaining strong bones” were translated and adapted as information on nutrition and osteoporosis for the readers, so they can understand the importance of the book. All recipes were evaluated for their calcium content by a nutritionist. The book also includes an extensive list of calcium rich foods.
“DELICIOSSO” was launched at a press conference, with most of the chefs and the public figures on hand, as well as guests from patient associations, health authorities, education authorities and many more.
The book was endorsed by the Portuguese League against Rheumatic Diseases and by SPODOM – Portuguese Society for Metabolic Bone Diseases, and was made possible by grants from the Portuguese subsidiaries of Lilly, Roche, GSK and Nestlé

Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society
Greetings to Vitamin D
On a fine, sunny June day, members of the Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society gathered in the castle of Dobrovo in Goriska brda for an event organized to raise public awareness about the importance of vitamin D for healthy bones.
The event featured a competition between members of the individual societies in preparing the best dish, which had to contain as much vitamin D and calcium as possible. Each society had access to the same ingredients. For creating their culinary wonderworks, they had at their disposal fatty fish (salmon and tuna), liver, eggs, broccoli and leek, celery, figs, milk, etc. For this event, five open air kithens were installed, and when things got going – they really got going. There was a clattering of pots, scraping and grating of vegetables, shouting and laughing.
While the contestants were preparing the foods, the other particiapnts were busy in the cherry orchard, the wine cellar, dancing oriental dances or relaxing with yoga.
When the contestants had placed their personally prepared dishes on the assessment table, the food was first tasted by the seventh power commission (journalists). While the commission was engaged in evaluation, the participants were listening to professional lectures on the importance and role of vitamin D.
Support for patients with osteoporosis and for the activities of the Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society was expressed by several well-known Slovenes. These included: the UNICEF ambassadors, the singer Lado Leskovar and the stage actress Milena Zupanèiè, the commedienne Nataš Tiè Ralijan, the noted opera singer Milena Moraèa, and the actor Jurij Souèek.
