The Campaign was launched in the town of Shoumen on September 28 2007. Host of the event was the Regional Inspectorate for Protection and Control of Public Health (RIPCPH) – Shoumen. It was in Shoumen that ten years ago the fruitful cooperation between the health administration and the non-governmental sector in the fight against osteoporosis began and this is the second consecutive year that it hosts the World Osteoporosis Day event. The traditional accent of the Campaign is the announcement of the awards in the competition for best public project on under the motto “Beat the break”. The competition was organized in memory of Tamara Kovatcheva, former chairwoman of Association “Women without Osteoporosis”.

The Hellenic Society of Osteoporosis Patient Support organized its first large World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) Campaign which included two press conferences, an awareness campaign in public places and on the internet, and two main WOD events in Athens and Thessaloniki, the two largest Greek cities.
Press Conferences
A first press conference, featuring expert speakers and Mrs. M. Tsekoura, President of the Hellenic Society of Osteoporosis Patient Support, was focused on osteoporosis, new data on risk factors, the situation in Greece and upcoming events. The attendance of journalists from both TV and print media resulted in a significant number of media reports.
The second press conference, aimed at journalists writing for monthly lifestyle magazines, placed special emphasis on nutrition and exercise as important factors in skeletal health. Expert speakers included an orthopaedist, a nutrition expert, and Greek star gymnast Eleni Petroulaki. The press event was followed by an impressive dairy/calcium-rich buffet.
Public awareness campaign
Large posters were placed in all stations of the Athens metro (more than 1.35 million passengers per month!) for 15 days preceding and following WOD. In addition, smaller posters were placed at eye level and, in the three days before WOD, every passenger waiting to board the trains could hear a message about osteoporosis broadcast from the metro's speakers.
On the internet the message 'World Osteoporosis Day is just an occasion to remind us that we have to love and care for ourselves" was spread via the society's members, friends and partners - urging others to pass on the message through a chain of emails and in blogs, websites etc. There was great feedback, with many young people showing real interest in bone health.
Awareness campaigns in Athens and Thessalonica
Further highlights of the campaign were the two large and centrally located exhibitions held in Greece's largest cities.

On October 20th a large exhibition stand was set up in Syntagma square in Athens - the city's most central meeting place. Volunteers distributed the IOF One-Minute Osteoporosis Risk Test and other information brochures. At the stand, onlookers were invited to participate in a game using 'fortune cookies'. The sound of the cookie breaking was likened to the sound of bone breaking - and inside the cookies were messages about one of six osteoporotic risk factors. The game attracted considerable attention and succeeded in communicating the risk factor message.

Indonesia
Indonesian Osteoporosis Society (PEROSI)
Top-level government support for National Osteoporosis Day
In Indonesia, National Osteoporosis Day falls every October 20 but in 2007 the campaign program was held in November. The campaign, supported by the Indonesian Osteoporosis Association (Perosi) and the Indonesian Healthy Bone Community, benefited from top level government participation. The 2007 osteoporosis campaign was "Minimize the Risks, Beat Osteoporosis" and was used to promote controllable risk factors of osteoporosis.
Communicable diseases and public health director I Nyoman Kandun announced that the government had provided a strong budget increase to fight osteoporosis. The provision of a higher budget and better diagnostic facilities is expected to reduce the prevalence of osteoporosis in Indonesian women, "We have allocated some Rp 6.3 billion to handle osteoporosis, compared to some Rp 162 million in 2000," he said. The government said it had provided osteoporosis diagnosis and evaluation instruments to 20 hospitals in seven provinces. The hospitals and provinces were chosen based on the necessity and the experts availability.
Health Minister Siti Fadillah Supari said she hoped the instruments could be helpful to support the effort in fighting osteoporosis disease. "We need to be aware of osteoporosis because (it can build slowly over) a long time, without any specific symptoms," she said.
"That is why this disease is called the silent epidemic." Siti was speaking at a 10,000-step walking event for National Osteoporosis Day which was attended by First Lady Kristiani Herawati and the Vice President's wife Mufidah Jusuf Kalla. Using figures from the health ministry's records in 2006 and across 16 regions nationally, Kristiani said the number of cases of osteoporosis in Indonesia was higher than the average world's prevalence. "There are two out of five Indonesians (with a) high risk of osteoporosis compared to the world-wide number of one out of three people," she said.
Earlier, Perosi chairman Prof. Ichramsjah A Rachman said women more than 50 years of age were more likely to develop osteoporosis. "Some 22 to 55 percent of Indonesia's elderly women are affected by osteoporosis," he said. "Another 30 to 40 percent of elderly women are affected by osteopenia, which is the early stage of osteoporosis.
"Osteopenia is like a yellow light telling us to be careful."

World Osteoporosis Campaign underlines importance of nutrition and exercise
The EMRC, which in January 2007 was designated as a WHO Collaborating Center for Research and Education Management of Osteoporosis and Diabetes, has been a forerunner of osteoporosis research in the region.
For World Osteoporosis Day 2007 the EMRC has emphasized the importance of nutrition and exercise as two components essential for the attainment of peak bone mass - an important aspect of osteoporosis prevention in later life. A central focus of the EMRC World Osteoporosis Day campaign is to raise public awareness in this regard, especially among the younger generation. Various events and meetings are being organized to educate people of different ages and various social, economic and educational backgrounds. Events are being held in kindergartens, schools and in different public venues. Four different posters are being distributed to members of the national osteoporosis network for display throughout Iran.
According to studies carried out by the EMRC under the supervision of Dr. Bagher Larijani, Head of EMRC, calcium intake in Iran is only 60% and vitamin D intake only 15% of recommended daily allowance. As a consequence of these serious findings, the EMRC has carried out a successful and wide-reaching national project which has lead to the popularization of milk intake and life style modification. It has also resulted in definitive action that will have tremendous impact on the nutritional status of children in Iran: As of November 19, 2007, 12 million school children from age 7 to 16 will enjoy drinking milk at school free of charge.
