IOF Latin America Regional Office

IOF Latin America launches 2009 calendar at televised World Osteoporosis Day event

IOF Latin America, the regional office for Latin America located in Buenos Aires, proudly launched a beautiful 2009 calendar "Cada mes piensa en tus huesos" (translation: Every month think of your bones) at a special World Osteoporosis Day-related event on October 27, 2008.

The calendar was created by IOF Latin America and its dedicated group of volunteer osteoporosis patients, the "IOF Angels". The calendar and launch event were sponsored in equal parts by Roche Argentina and by individual donations.

Each "Angel", with photo and short personal story, is featured on one of the months. The photos show the individual holding an object or carrying out an activity that characterizes his or her everyday life. The calendar is designed to show that it is possible to fight osteoporosis and lead an active life. It transmits a positive educational message very much in keeping with the World Osteoporosis Day motto of "stand tall - speak out for your bones".

Some 130 people, including invited guests, media, and industry representatives, attended the spectacular evening launch ceremonies at the "Hotel de las Americas" in Buenos Aires. The most famous Argentinean TV show dedicated to non-governmental organization work in the country covered the event; publishing the calendar photos, interviewing Dr. Zanchetta (IOF Board Member and legal representative of the IOF Latin America office) and reporting on the personal stories of volunteers Teresita Romano (Miss December) and Cristina Peralta Ramos (Miss January). The TV special dedicated to the event is available at: http://tv.infobae.com/4396-1024-16-Fundación-Internacional-de-Osteoporosis.

During the evening, Dr. Zanchetta gave a talk about osteoporosis, and Eduardo Nuesch, regional coordination, presented the activities and the 2009 program of the IOF regional office. Appreciation was extended to all those involved, including Malala Fontan, the photographer, and Laura Fernandez, the fashion producer. During the evening, a silver necklace with stones donated by Claudia Staad of Jean Pierre Jewelry was raffled, and 2009 calendars were sold, raising 10,000 Argentinean Pesos for the work of IOF Latin America.

Christina Peralta Ramos is awarded for her contributions to IOF Latin America as one of many dedicated IOF Angels

At the closing, a video highlighting the backstage production and the volunteer's "bloopers" was shown. Cristina Peralta Ramos received an acknowledgement for her special contributions as an "IOF Angel" during the year 2008. This award was proposed by the other volunteers and presented by the legal representative.

The World Osteoporosis Day 2008 Thematic Report and A5 leaflet “Stand tall, speak out for your bones” were distributed, as the groundwork of the campaign intended to stimulate people to take individual responsibility into a wider arena. The campaign empowers and encourages individuals to spread the message, saying to their families and communities,“you take care of your own bone health, now speak out for change”.

IOF and the staff of the IOF Latin America regional office would like to extend their thanks to the IOF Angels, whose enthusiasm and support made the project possible.

Armenia

Armenian Osteoporosis Association

World Osteoporosis Day event in Armenia generates media attention and enthusiasm among health professionals

The Armenian Osteoporosis Assocation’s World Osteoporosis Day event on October 20 was very well received, with high interest among the large number of participants (250 people, primarily doctors of different specializations). The interest shown indicates that osteoporosis is perceived as a problem of growing importance in the country and that health professionals are eager to learn more about the disease. Many of the participants expressed interest in collaborating with the Armenian Osteoprosois Association to fight osteoporosis in the country.

Dr. Haroyan of the Armenian Osteoporosis Association opened with a speech about the importance of the osteoporosis, introducing new data gathered from the patients’ screening program carried out over the previous 10 months in 2008. He called on participants to be more active in osteoporosis prevention and support demands to have the government accept osteoporosis as a disease of high importance.

Other speakers included a gynecologist and neurologist who discussed specific medical aspects of osteoporosis. Participants were encouraged to exchange information and ideas during coffee break. Two medical centers in Yerevan presented data gathered from DXA scans, discussing how to interpret the data and giving an overview of the statistics gathered from DXA results. In addition, an orthopedist-traumatologist presented an article about hip fracture in osteoporotic patients treated in their clinic.

Two pharmaceutical firms, Roche and Sagmel, helped to organize the event which was
recorded by TV channel representatives. It received good media coverage through Euronews channel and via advertisements for the hot lines for patients which the Association had organized. Doctors affiliated with the Association answered questions, and people at risk were offered a 50% discount on DXA scans. Informational material for patients (including lifestyle’s criteria, exercises and Ca requirements etc) was prepared.

The Armenian Association cooperates with different Medical Centers throughout the country, with its main aim to enlarge awareness about osteoporosis among the Armenian people. Plans are underway to start screening of patients and diagnosing osteoporosis in different medical spheres. The Association is also active in advocacy, starting a policy program in which they have written a letter to the Minister of Health requesting that osteoporosis be given governmental attention as a health care problem. Videos to be shown on TV are planned, parallel to the telephone hot lines where patients can get information about the disease and organize a doctor’s consultation and reduced-rate DXA exams if required.

World Osteoporosis Day 2008: Athletes reveal the secret of strong bones

Representatives from Australia's sporting and medical arenas joined forces with the Federal Minister for Ageing, The Hon. Justine Elliott MP on October 21, 2008 to celebrate World Osteoporosis Day and to announce the release of guidelines encouraging Australians to build healthy bones and help prevent fractures.

In Australia, about half of women and a third of men over the age of 60 will experience a fracture as a result of osteoporosis. But evidence demonstrates that the risk of fracture can be halved through a combination of exercise, a healthy diet and medication when required.

"The best activities for great bone health are those done in rapid, short bursts of high intensity such as brisk walking, jogging and weight training," said Professor Maria Fiatarone Singh, an exercise and sports scientist from the University of Sydney.

Olympic bronze medal race walker Jane Saville says there are many different exercises that improve bone and muscle strength."As an elite athlete, I understand the importance of building strong muscle and bone. My message for World Osteoporosis Day is that it doesn't matter how old or fit you are, you need to start exercising, at least three times a week, to help prevent osteoporosis."

According to Osteoporosis Australia, there are four main principles behind building powerful bones:
1. Weight bearing: these exercises are performed upright and target the large muscle groups (e.g. brisk walking, hiking, stair climbing, jogging and aerobic dance)
2. Resistance training: also known as strength training or weight lifting, these exercises are performed with free weights or are machine-based
3. High impact: these exercises encourage the spine and legs to carry the majority of one's body weight (e.g. skipping with a rope)
4. Balance training: these exercises are designed to increase the body's sense of balance, reducing the risk of falling (e.g. standing on one leg with eyes closed, sitting on an exercise ball or performing Tai Chi)

Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot MP officially endorsed the guidelines, saying osteoporosis often went undiagnosed until a fracture occurred.
"Targeted exercise is one way of helping to reduce the risk of osteoporotic fracture. On World Osteoporosis Day, I encourage both men and women over 50 to start using these new guidelines to improve their bone health," Mrs Elliot said.

Craig Foster, former National Socceroos Captain who has represented Australia 29 times, agreed:
"Activities like football and other ball sports are great for balance and coordination, and they have weight-bearing benefits as well," he said.
Wally Masure, National Coach for the Australian Tennis Junior Development Program and former Australian Davis Cup Coach, who spent 13 years playing on the ATP Tour, echoed Craig's sentiments.

"Many people are probably unaware that professional tennis players have around 30 per cent higher bone density in their playing arm than their non-playing arm. This demonstrates the beneficial effect of high impact exercise on bone," he said."You have high impact, weight bearing exercise, and balance and coordination all rolled into one with tennis."

The Exercise and Fracture Prevention Guides are available from Osteoporosis Australia (national office) and its state offices or call 1800 242 141 or visit http://www.osteoporosis.org.au/.

Chinese Taipei

Chinese Taiwan Osteoporosis Association

Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association (TOA) calls on people to “Stand tall and speak out for your bones”

Osteoporosis is a silent illness, therefore, there is no simple way to predict the occurrence of fractures. From a medical point of view, the doctor hopes that people who are identified as having a higher potential risk can get appropriate treatment to prevent fractures in advance - instead of waiting until fractures happen and suffering through a long period of post-fracture care and rehabilitation.

“Stand tall” means to prevent illness: Osteoporosis prevention should begin in childhood, the right time to begin to pay attention to bone health. Nutrition should include enough calcium content and vitamin D, with regular and proper weight exercise to help bones grow and maintain strength.

“Speak Out for your bones” represents the idea that people should speak out for themselves and others, and demand fair treatment for the osteoporosis patient, “said the president of Osteoporosis Association of R.O.C, Dr. Soong Yong Kui. He emphasized and mentioned the following points to public:
1. The government’s health care plan should cover osteoporosis treatment for all at high risk, not just after fractures occur.
2. The government’s health care plan should cover DXA examinations to the public above age of 50.
3. We should correct people’s wrong concept about taking Glucosamine and SCP (Sulfate Condrontin Protein) which can cure osteoarthritis, but not use these medicine for osteoporosis.
4. Osteoporosis’ medical usage should only follow a specialist doctor’s prescription, instead of buying from a public drugstore or pharmacy and use the medication without a doctor’s prescription and advice.
In this Years’ “World Osteoporosis Day” Osteoporosis Association of R.O.C held an event on October 19, 2008 at Sun Yat-Sen Park (westside of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall). In this festival there was free “Examination of Bone Density” and free bone-health related gift items to the public who attended this event.

Do you want to know “Are you at higher chance getting of getting osteoporosis?” With the ageing of the population this has become a common issue throughout the world and osteoporosis prevention has to become a priority and a commonly known health issue, especially among the aged.

World Osteoporosis Day in Czech Republic

Dr Cabrnoch, MEP spoke at the World Osteoporosis Day events.

On October 20th a press conference was held. Journalists were informed about this year´s motto "Stand tall, speak out for your bones" as well as about the latest possibilities in prevention, diagnostics, and treatment of osteoporosis. The main results of the report "Osteoporosis in the European Union in 2008" were announced with special emphasis on the situation in the Czech Republic.

Information booths were set up in Prague shopping centres. Bystanders obtained handouts about osteoporosis. People could also sign a petition to members of both Parliament Chambers. The idea was to draw attention to the problems of osteoporosis in the course of preparation of new legislative health-policy changes in the future. Three hundreds and fifty signatures were gathered during the first day.

A Round Table was organised by the Czech National Osteoporosis Forum. Participants from seven medical societies decided to cooperate in establishing a complex Osteoporosis program in the Czech Republic. The Round Table endorsed a petition to the Minister of Health as well as information letter to officials and national institutions with invitation and appeal for cooperation.

World Osteoporosis Day celebrated in Egypt

The Egyptian Osteoporosis Prevention Society, with the support of Tetra Pak Egypt and Merck Pharmaceutical Company, set up an information booth at one of Cairo’s largest malls, Maadi City Centre, from 17 to 23 October, 2008.

Receiving some 100 shoppers per day, the booth manned with nutritionists and doctors, offered tips on how to prevent osteoporosis, the importance of including milk calcium in daily diet and the importance of treatment for those who are diagnosed as being at risk of fracture. The booth included a bone density machine, and experts offered shoppers over 45 years of age free bone density measurements.

The booth was supported by a strong PR campaign. A press release announcing the booth was widely distributed to all Egyptian media, and a press conference was held on 20 October – on the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day – to raise awareness of this silent disease. The press conference was attended by specialized media and physicians.

"Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones of the body start to crumble. One out of three women and one out of five men are affected by osteoporosis." stated Thomas Adner, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Egypt, in the press release distributed to the media. "Following a balanced diet rich in calcium, such as clean packaged milk, and moderate exercise can help to prevent this disease... Tetra Pak; the world's leading processing and packaging solutions company - along with its partners in the dairy industry - works hard to make sure that milk is accessible to all people. We are very proud to be part of this campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of osteoporosis and how to avoid it."

Greece

Hellenic Society of Osteoporosis Patients Support

World Osteoporosis Day campaign motivates people to speak up about bone health.

Under the motto (literal translation) "we speak up for ourselves, we take care of everybody" , the main theme of the World Osteoporosis Campaign was “extroversion”. This concept (the opposite of introversion) focuses on the need to share a health problem with your doctor, your friends, or people that may have the same problem as you. If you are an extrovert, you can really motivate other people to take care of their bone health, to take preventive action and check ups, to communicate with your doctor, and to adopt a health lifestyle. Through constant public awareness even healthcare policy officials will be motivated to take action.

Activities held:

20th of October 2008: World Osteoporosis Day - Athens. One-day Conference dedicated to skeletal health. During the conference, experts conducted the FRAX test and explained the results to the public.

Israel

The Israeli Foundation for Osteoporosis and Bone Diseases

An original play about osteoporosis 'Pick just one more flower' launched for World Osteoporosis Day

“Pick just one more flower” is the title of an original play about osteoporosis that was launched by the ISFOB in celebration of World Osteoporosis Day. It is an inspiring, touching and educational experience performed in English, Hebrew and Spanish. The play was written, conceptualized and performed by Shula Revach, and directed by Haim Ignatowsky.

Actress Shula Revach on stage during a performance of "Just to pick one more flower"

Shula Revach:
Shula Revach, an Israeli actress and playwright, wrote “Pick just one more Flower” after being commissioned by “The Israeli Foundation for Osteoporosis” to create a play that will raise awareness of the disease.

In order to write the play, Ms Revach researched the subject matter and met with women who suffered from osteoporosis. Finding a gateway into their hearts, Ms Revach succeeded in creating a play that touches on the most intimate and personal aspects of dealing and living with osteoporosis.

In order to supplement her research, Ms Revach met with numerous doctors and medical experts in order to interlace in-dept medical information about the crucial early diagnosis of the disease, as well as its forms of treatment which are continually being improved.

The play is based on real life stories of women who paid a heavy price due to the lack of awareness to the disease and its forms of diagnosis.

“Pick just one more flower” was selected to be shown in annual conferences of the Israeli Foundation of Osteoporosis as well as medical organizations dealing with the disease. It gained much success as a mode of expression for those who had to endure the affects of osteoporosis.

The Play
A chance encounter between a “healthy” woman and her osteoporosis inflicted friend shakes her to the core: “…Till I met Thelma my life was happy and serene. She has it… she is still beautiful and glowing but in her eyes lay a sadness I never knew..”

Thelma: “I am 56 and I feel 80…. Do you know what it is like not to be able to pick up your grandchild? He runs to me and I, “a bad grandmother” do not pick him up… because its hard… because I am not allowed… it feels like a knife is splitting my back open… and everything feels broken… my bones feel broken… I am so afraid of being a burden to my family. You know what I miss most? Bending over flowers in my garden, to smell them… pick them.. to pick just one more flower… “
The fateful encounter leads the heroine of the play to a series of decisions and insights about health feminity and accountability.
The heroine changes her life style and from then on chooses healthy living, good nutrition, daily exercise and routine check ups. The play ends unexpectedly and holds a promise of hope and optimism for those who have already been afflicted by osteoporosis.
“From this moment on, my life is dedicated to me, myself. From this moment on, I give birth to myself”, says the heroine of the play in a moment of hope.

** The play can be followed by an audience discussion and panels with osteoporosis experts (medical and/or nutritional as well as bone exercise specialists).

Republic of Macedonia

Macedonian Osteoporosis Association (MOA)

Media campaign precedes World Osteoporosis Day public events

World Osteoporosis Day 2008 celebrations were organized out of the Macedonian capital city Skopje, with public events carried out in two large regional towns.

The famous opera singer Mrs. Milka Eftimova spoke at the public event in Radovis, a small town in eastern Macedonia. As an osteoporosis patient herself, Mrs Eftimova related her own experience with osteoporosis, emphasizing the important role of prevention and encouraging every woman to ‘speak out’ in order to stand tall and have healthy bones. Prof. Markovic-Temelkova, president of the Macedonian Osteoporosis Association, lectured about osteoporosis – why it is known as a ‘silent killer’ and the right actions to take to combat this debilitating disease. The event proved very popular, with great interest among the local population. Following the lecture, more than 20 ultra sound measurements were made, free of charge, for women over 55 years of age.

A second public event took place in Bitola, a town in southern Macedonia. The director of the Medical Center in Bitola opened the ceremony. Here, the event was organized under the motto "Meet the expert".

Prof. Markovic-Temelkova and two local doctors spoke to the audience, which showed great interest in the information given. The audience was then given to the opportunity to talk to the osteoporosis experts affiliated with the Macedonian Osteoporosis Society, receiving personalized responses to their questions and advice about exercises, nutrition, and healthy life style habits. A highlight was the participation of Mrs Violeta Tomovska, a well known singer, Macedonia’s first lady of folk music. Mrs. Tomovska is President of the Breast Cancer Society in Macedonia and spoke about the successful collaboration between the two societies. Both diseases are common and serious challenges in women’s health. The event ended with Mrs. Tomovska singing the very popular song "Pray".

The World Osteoporosis Day events were preceded by a national media campaign earlier in the month. Medical doctors, members of the Macedonian Osteoporosis Society, were present on national and local TV programs, speaking about osteoporosis, giving advice on how to prevent and treat the disease. In addition, many articles and news items appeared in the weekly magazines and daily newspapers.

World Osteoporosis Day public forum in Singapore

The Osteoporosis Society organized a public forum with 2 sessions in English and Mandarin.
The topics covered included Are You at Risk, Fractures, Falls Prevention and Tai Chi in Osteoporosis. The topic on Nutrients for bone health was in the form of a food display with nutrition counselling by our qualified dietitians and assisted by undergraduate students in Food Science from a Polytechnic. Whitening creams and sun blockers were on display to help participants understand the importance of the the sunshine vitamin D

The OSTA chart and the Ultra sound heel scan were used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Those at high risk were given vouchers for a discounted DXA scan. Counselling was provided by nurses and physiotherapists from the health institutions

Society President, Professor Tang Ching Lau led all the participants in some Tai Chi movements.
The practice of Tai Chi on a regular basis has been shown by several studies to strengthen muscles and help maintain better balance. This in turn helps to reduce falls which is an important risk factor for osteoporosis.
Society members also invited participants to join in the Tai Chi demonstration at the display area where the message was " Tai Chi helps you to Stand Tall!" The request for the Osteoporosis Society to run Tai Chi classes after the public forum was overwhelming.

Close to 360 participants joined in the World Osteoporosis Day 2008 celebration. Participants came from the heartlands and a religious organisation.

Each participant was treated to some delicious and healthy high calcium snacks. Each went away with a goody bag containing high calcium bread, milk, drinks, apple dippers and calcium supplements. Some lucky participants won supermarket shopping vouchers, Branded T shirts, and special Fun Cushions.

Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society

Stand tall Speak out for your bones!

This year's World Osteoporosis Day in Slovenia, under the slogan Stand tall 'Speak out for your bones' was organized by the Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society with operational support from the regional osteoporosis patient branch of Pomurje – Radenci and Thermal Spa Radenci. The event was privileged to have the honorary patronage of the Slovene First Lady, Mrs. Barbara Miklic Tuerk. More than 880 participants attended from all over the country.

A highlight of the assembly, which commenced at 10 in the morning, was the opening address of the First Lady of Slovenia, Mrs. Barbara Miklic Tuerk, honorary patron of the Slovene Osteoporosis Society. Her address was followed by that of the President of the Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society, Dusa Hlade Zore, M.D. The guests, which included members of the press, heard the following message:

"Since the foundation of the organization in 1988, the Slovene society has been a member of IOF, as one of the 191 associations from 91 countries that form part of this international organization. We would like to call to the attention of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia the necessity for a timely diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. We must go beyond our thinking that osteoporosis is only a disease of elderly people. With the Petition for Reimbursement of Bone Density Scans for individuals at high risk of osteoporosis-related fractures, we can prevent numerous fractures of hands, vertebrae, hips, - thus saving the enormous cost of related medical treatment for these fractures. In Europe alone in the year 2000 the cost of treatments exceeded 31,7 billion Euros. So we will stand tall and speak out for our bones!"

(The complete text of the petition is provided below)

Scientific professionals provided further valuable information at the meeting. First, there was a well-received talk by Prof. Dr. Janez Prezelj, M.D. head of the Department for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases of the Ljubljana Clinical Center on the problems of detection of osteoporosis in Slovenia from the aspect of medical science.

Prim.assist. Jana Govc Erzen, M.D., family physician from the Health Center from Vojnik presented an interesting view in her topic: The role of the family physician in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Mr. Ivan Zorman, M.D., from the Health Insurance Institution of Slovenia spoke about the problems of osteoporosis detection in Slovenia from a financial point of view.

A lively question and answer discussion period resulted. The health professional content of the meeting was successfully followed up by local cultural and musical entertainment.

For a hearty ending all present enjoyed a festive meal at the Thermal Spa Hotel Radin.

Petition
For reimbursement of Bone Density Scans for individuals at high risk of osteoporosis-related fractures

The Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society is an associate organization of local osteoporosis patient societies that has for years been endeavoring to provide cost-free bone density scans for persons with an increased risk of osteoporosis-related fractures.

In 1998 the European Commission recommended that all EU members should ensure cost-free bone density scans for people with a high risk of osteoporosis. Ten years have elapsed since that recommendation was made. During that period, Slovenia has become a full member of the European Union, yet because of inadequate access to Bone Density Scans, numerous elderly people are still unnecessarily being exposed to the increased risk of osteoporotic fractures.

With the provision of timely and appropriate diagnosis, it is possible to prevent fractures of the hands, vertebrae and hips, which may leave elderly persons bed-bound, and which for many may prove even to be fatal. That is why this PETITION is supported by the members of the Slovene Osteoporosis Patient Society, numerous osteoporosis specialists, and the Slovene Pensioners Association.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, ARE CALLING UPON THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH OF THE REPUBLIC OF SLOVENIA TO ENSURE, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION AND IN CONFORMITY WITH THE PREVAILING PRACTICE IN COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION, COST-FREE BONE DENSITY SCANS FOR PERSONS WITH A HIGH RISK OF INCREASED OSTEOPOROSIS, AND FOR WOMEN AFTER THE AGE OF 65.

WITH BONE DENSITY SCANS WE PREVENT OSTEOPOROSIS!

These may include visits to nursing homes and training programs to increase awareness of falls and fractures among the geriatric population. Sufficiency of Vitamin D intake in this elderly population is a cause of concern and a program to evaluate intakes is being considered.

As fortified milk products are not available in Turkey, the Society is also trying to promote their availability.

Another focus of the Society's planned prevention-oriented activities is school children. Activities to raise awareness of calcium-rich drinking and eating habits and exercise are being planned, including a ‘rope jumping project’ in schools.

A forest of trees was established in the name of the society, with 1000 trees planted! There was media coverage of the planting and, during the following National Congress, society members gave out certificates to participants, informing them that they each owned a tree in the forest.

In addition, in the month of October, the society arranged to have their name and a World Osteoporosis Day acknowledgement printed on the special Turkish National Lottery tickets sold every ten days.

"Boogie for Your Bones" dance competition to be performed on World Osteoporosis Day

Love your Bones is a UK-wide campaign to raise awareness at all levels about the importance of healthy bones. The campaign seeks to improve understanding of osteoporosis and what causes it, and to promote the steps people can take to keep their bones healthy and reduce their risk.

One of the four major projects that comprise the campaign is "Boogie for Your Bones". The NOS will join forces with Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood and NOS Patron Dr. Miriam Stoppard to offer dance schools from across the UK the chance to perform in front of an array of well known celebrities at London’s Royal Festival Hall on World Osteoporosis Day, 20th October 2008. The "Boogie For Your Bones" dance will be performed to the live music of funk band Hula Grove who will sing their version of the well known song 'Dry Bones'.

Dance troupes are invited to apply for the chance to perform at the event, with four lucky winners to be selected to perform their version of the new dance steps at the World Osteoporosis Day event.

National Osteoporosis Foundation celebrates World Osteoporosis Day

“Stand Tall—Speak Out for Your Bones”

Washington, DC (October 20, 2008) — Today, the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) is joining bone health organizations from around the globe to celebrate World Osteoporosis Day. This day serves as a focal point for the international community to inform and educate the public and policymakers about the importance of osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

In support of this year's campaign theme selected by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, “Stand Tall—Speak Out for Your Bones,” NOF is rallying the members of its Bone Health Advocacy Network to inform policymakers about the impact osteoporosis has on their communities. NOF advocates are urging legislators to advance public health policies that raise awareness about osteoporosis and bone health and educate the public about steps to improve their bone health through diet, exercise and, when needed, medication. The Foundation’s advocates are also helping NOF expand access to testing, treatment options and medications for the 44 million Americans with or at-risk for osteoporosis and increase funding for osteoporosis research to find a cure and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease.

With the rising cost of healthcare the relevancy of disease awareness and prevention has become an increasingly important topic to voters in the upcoming presidential election.

“NOF will work with the next administration and Congress to carry out our efforts to not only educate individuals about the risk factors of osteoporosis and help them with disease management, but to push for adequate government funding and support for vital awareness programs,” said Leo Schargorodski, executive director of NOF.

Inspired by the theme for World Osteoporosis Day, NOF has been working with leaders from government, business and major public health and medical organizations in an effort to bring osteoporosis and bone health to the forefront of our nation’s health agenda. In June 2008, NOF, together with the National Coalition for Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases, held a Summit for a National Action Plan for Bone Health in Washington, D.C. The Coalition, made up of NOF, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation and The Paget Foundation, worked with these groups to develop strategies to increase awareness of osteoporosis and prevent the consequences of low bone density and osteoporosis. A planning group, consisting of public and private organizations, is coordinating a follow-up reporting phase for the Summit to assess next steps in creating a national action plan for bone health and osteoporosis.

To make a difference this World Osteoporosis Day, join NOF in raising awareness about better bone health! Here are three simple ways you can speak out for your bones:

· Become an advocate for better bone health today. Join NOF’s Bone Health Advocacy Network to advance bone health and osteoporosis to the top of the national healthcare agenda!

· Ask friends and family to join NOF in the fight against osteoporosis by becoming advocates for better bone health.

· Visit the “Advocacy” section of the NOF Web site at www.nof.org/advocacy and write a letter to your elected officials urging them to make bone health a priority in the next Congress.
