Action for Healthy Bones

World Osteoporosis Day sees start of nursing home initiative

'Action for Healthy Bones' will support the 'Austrian Patient Society' with information material and a media campaign during World Osteoporosis Day. In addition, the society will launch a large initiative in cooperation with the „Chamber of Nursing Homes in Austria“ (Lebenswelt Heim). All nursing homes in Austria are invited to participate.

The idea is to measure the body height of nursing home residents within a time frame of six months. The aim is to advise those who discover that they have lost height to get a clinical assessment to find out if they have osteoporosis and, if indicated, whether they have suffered a vertebral fracture.

After the second measurement the „Action of Healthy bones“ will evaluate the collected data, with the study being led by the society's medical head, Univ. Prof. Dr. Kurt Weber. The results will be analyzed and published. Media campaigns at the beginning of the initiative as well as after publishing the results will complete the project.

On the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day and under the slogan "Stand Tall for Bone Health", the Jordanian Osteoporosis Prevention Society (JOPS) participated in the international marathon held in Amman on October 17th, 2009.

JOPS sponsored 5 adults and 45 students – both girls and boys - between the age of 6 and 18 to take part in Amman's first marathon, held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of HM King Abdullah II's accession to the throne.

The participation of the students – representing seven public and private schools - was organized by JOPS in cooperation with the Directorate of Private Education at the Jordanian Ministry of Education. Students took part in the 4 and 10 km runs while two of the adult athletes sponsored by JOPS completed the 42 km marathon run, one of them coming in first in his age category.

JOPS volunteers of all ages but mainly young university students and graduates were on hand at water stations and to help staff at the JOPS booth in the Marathon Village where a wide range of brochures, exercise leaflets and a JOPS calcium-rich recipe book were on exhibit. Over the course of four days visitors received information on bone health as well as about JOPS activities. Bone density scans for 40+ year old women and men were also on offer for a symbolic fee of 7 US dollars.

The marathon received very wide media coverage, broadcast live on Jordan's local and satellite television as well as five minute long highlights on the news at six, eight and ten o'clock. The event also received extensive coverage in local newspapers and various magazines for one whole week.

The high profile and extensive preparations for the Amman International Marathon prompted JOPS to celebrate World Osteoporosis Day with this participation, increasing its visibility and outreach within the community.

On Saturday 24 October 2009 the Osteoporosis Society (Singapore) organized a Public Forum with related activities to celebrate World Osteoporosis Day 2009 under the slogan 'Stand Tall Speak Up For Your Bones'.

Both sessions (English and Mandarin)were fully subscribed and there was a turnout of about 500 eager-to-learn participants.

Mr Heng Chee How, Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office was the Guest-Of-Honour (GOH).
His keynote address stressed the burden of the disease and how a holistic intervention of diet, exercise and drugs is key to bone health.
The Minister of State was delighted that various agencies, both private and public, cooperate so well in bringing about greater awareness of the prevention and management of osteoporosis. He ended his speech by encouraging the partners to carry on the good work and help to realize the vision of 'Growing Old Gracefully'.

The public forum included topics such as Holistic Management of Osteoporosis, Food For Strong Bones and Ways to Prevent Falls. A group of elderly residents from the constituency of the Minister of State gave a Tai Chi demonstration for the audience. It was a graceful performance and served to remind all that it is never to late to take up exercises to strengthen muscles and to prevent falls.

There were additional activities such as falls assessment and vision screening that were conducted by nursing students from the Institute of Technical Education. Screening for osteoporosis was also conducted using the Osteoporosis Self Assessment Tool for Asian Women and the ultra sound heel scan. Those at risk were issued vouchers for a diagnostic scan at a discounted rate

There was ‘supermarket’ display of high calcium foods. Qualified nutritionists and dietitians were on hand to provide dietary advice. Students from the Polytechnic provided additional help for the dietary segment. At the end of each session the participants were treated to refreshments of chilled milk and High calcium snacks.

In spite of his hectic schedule the Minister of State was very interactive and took part in all the fringe activities, stopping at all the stations and also spending time talking with all the sponsors and participants alike.

The Osteoporosis Society would like to thank Mr. Heng Chee How for allocating time to grace the event. It would also like to thank its Partners, Health Promotion Board, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Thanks is also given to Eli Lilly, MSD, Novartis, Sanofi- Aventis and Servier for their educational grants. Appreciation is also extended to the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) for providing the Asian Audit Report (with unrestricted sponsorship from Fonterra) and to the Singapore Nutrition and Dietetics Association which co-ordinated the full high calcium food display and dietary counselling.

The event would not be complete without the generous support of door gifts and prizes from Fonterra, Friesland, Gardenia Bread, Gardenia Bread, Malaysia Dairies, McDonald’s and Nestle.

The Osteoporosis Society thanks all its members and others who have helped in one way or another to make the event such a successful one.

Schools from across the UK entered an original dance routine to win a fun day all about bone health, including learning some slick moves from the dance judge.

Her Royal Highness joined Craig Revel Horwood on the London leg of the tour to welcome him as the charity’s newest Patron and to observe the outstanding work that the school has been doing towards better bone health.

Her Royal Highness saw first-hand the benefits of her 2007 call for younger people to be better educated about the 'mega importance' of both a healthy diet and regular exercise to maintain healthy bones. As recognition of their ongoing work, Her Royal Highness presented St Clement Danes School with a certificate which she had personally signed. The certificate read: “Through educational activities involving dance and nutrition, they have shown the National Osteoporosis Society that they understand the importance of building bones from a young age. Their effort and enthusiasm when building bones for life is outstanding.”

The Bone Factor Tour reaches children at a crucial age because bones stop growing in length between the ages of 16 and 18, and peak bone density is reached in our mid 20s. Regular weight-bearing exercise when we are young, like dancing, combined with a balanced, calcium-rich diet means that we can build stronger bones at this crucial time to support us as we get older. Healthy lifestyles at any age can help maintain our bones but by targeting children we are making big steps early on to prevent potentially disabling bone problems, like osteoporosis, in later life.
