Broad range of educational activities throughout Sweden to highlight World Osteoporosis Day 2008

The Swedish Osteoporosis Patient Society (ROP) will organize or take part in the following activities in connection with World Osteoporosis Day.

• Värnamo, Småland, October 20: “Education day for the general public” arranged by The Project for Better Health of Elderly People. Margareta Vänngård, chair of the Swedish Osteoporosis Patient Society will contribute.

• Sölvesborg, Blekinge, October 20: “New treatment possibilities for osteoporosis”, lecture by professor Göran Samsioe. The Skåne society is also invited

• Skåne: “Medication of Osteoporosis – what is available today and what will come”, Professor Östen Ljunggren. Recorded lecture presented at meetings in Lund/Malmö, Helsingborg/Ängelholm, Tomelilla/Simrishamn and Hässleholm/Kristianstad.

• Stockholm: a) October 8, 15 and 22: Study group for self support
b) October 9 in Huddinge: “Osteoporosis”, lecture by Dr Mats Palmér
c) October 14 in Södertälje: “Osteoporosis – a national disease “ lecture by Dr Agneta Aili Nolte

• Uppsala, October 16: “Vitamin D”, lecture by Dr Ewa Waern, “Interpretation of bone density data”, lecture by Dr Hans Mallmin

• Östergötland, Mjölby, October 25: Lectures by professor Göran Toss and physiotherapist Lotta Grahn Kronhed.

• Norrbotten, Sunderby Hospital, November 11: “Improving the Osteoporosis Care in Norrbotten” An education day for doctors, nurses and politicians.

ROP is also an active participant in the Expert Group for Osteoporosis and the Swedish Osteoporosis Society. The Expert Group will arrange a full-day meeting in Stockholm on October 24, focused on the following themes: Osteoporosis in primary care, New policy documents for osteoporosis and Treatment of fractures in elderly people. The Swedish Osteoporosis Society (SVOS) will have its annual full-day meeting in Uppsala, on October 17, 2008

Counties hosted variety of lectures, conferences and presentations

The Swedish Osteoporosis Patient Society (Riksföreningen Osteoporotiker – ROP) planned a variety of activities in various counties, to include:

•On 20 October, in the county of Blekinge, a lecture was given by a dietician and a physiotherapist;

•On the same day, in Stockholm, a conference was held by the Expert Group on Osteoporosis;

•On 21 October, in the county of Värmland, an orthopaedic specialist, Dr Ola Wessmark, gave a lecture;

•On 22 October, in Western Götaland (Gothenburg), a presentation was given by Prof. Dan Mellström and an expert physiotherapist;

•On 26 October, in the county of Jämtland (Östersund), Dr Håkan Furman hosted an "open lecture”.

Osteoporosis: A Photographic Vision held in Stockholm

A successful showing of the exhibit 'Osteoporosis: A Photographic Vision' was held at the City Conference Centre in Stockholm, Sweden from February 21 to 27, 2005.

The opening ceremony to which the media was invited included a panel presentation with patients and osteoporosis experts. ROP hosted the exhibition in cooperation with IOF, the German Green Cross, and the Bone and JOint Decade (BJD). The exhibition was made possible thanks to generous, unrestricted support from MSD.
