OSHK World Osteoporosis Day 2009 campaign

In the month of October and November, the OSHK launched a series of public education campaigns to raise public awareness of osteoporosis. Four one-hour radio interviews were aired to educate the public on FRAX assessment, new drugs for treating osteoporosis, importance of vitamin D intake, fall prevention and bone and joint health. There were six episodes of “Medicine Online” produced by NOW TV and one interview at Television Broadcast’s women programme. The TV programmes covered various topics from prevention and diagnosis of osteoporosis to treatment of osteoporosis and fall prevention. It also featured patients with osteoporotic fractures, sharing their recovery process and urging the public to be aware of osteoporosis.

On 1st November, 2009, the “B”symposium was organized to echo the World Osteoporosis Day theme of advocating awareness of osteoporosis in the public sector, healthcare providers and policy makers. This “B” symposium entitled “B”isphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw, started with the release of survey findings on “Awareness of Osteoporosis in Hong Kong” by Prof. Annie Kung. This was part of the Asian GAP Survey that surveyed the aftercare of hip fracture patients in Asia. The Revised OSHK guideline on osteoporosis was released, providing up-to-date guidance to clinicians regarding the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of osteoporosis. The afternoon session focused on bisphosphonate-related osteoporosis of the jaw with dental surgeons and endocrinologist sharing their experiences and views on the current scenario in Hong Kong.

World Osteoporosis Day 2007 - Bone Health Day
In response to the World Osteoporosis Day, OSHK and the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK) co-organised the “Bone Health Day 2007” to arouse public awareness of osteoporosis, its risk factors and preventive measures. The event was successfully held in Kowloon City Plaza on 13 October 2007.

Legislative Council member the Hon Chan Yuen-han, SBS JP, officiated at the event Opening. She encouraged people to start early in building and strengthening their bones and to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from bone fractures.

The event was kicked off by Prof. Annie Kung, who released her latest study findings on “Clinical Risk Factor Assessment on Bone Factures of Hong Kong Women”. She pointed out that osteoporosis was a condition associated with bone fragility and increased risk of bone fractures. It was one of the most common and disabling illnesses that was associated with pain, loss of mobility and independence. Many patients died within one year of their fracture. About one third of postmenopausal women and one tenth of men above the age of 50 had osteoporosis. It was estimated that about 300,000 women and 100,000 men in Hong Kong were currently suffering from the disease. This study confirmed that clinical risk factor assessment, in addition to BMD measurement, was a reliable predictor of 10-year risk of osteoporosis fracture.

Prof. Kwok-sui Leung of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, shared his experience in the Community Fall and Fracture Prevention Project. The Project trained a group of women volunteers from FPAHK’s Women’s Clubs as “Bone Health Ambassadors” to help promote the “Ten-combo Exercise” in the community. At the carnival, a group of ambassadors demonstrated the Ten combo exercise and Towel exercise. Other activities included tongue-twister competition, gymnastic demonstrations, game booths and exhibition. Free calcaneal bone density measurement and balance test were offered to the public.

OSHK and HKOF successfully host global WOD 2006 launch

The IOF global launch of World Osteoporosis Day 2006, on Friday, 20 October was marked by a successful media conference and, in keeping with the theme “Bone Appétit: the role of food and nutrition in building and maintaining strong bones”, was followed by an exclusive “bone-friendly” lunch for sixty created by Executive Sous Chef Tsui Kit Po at the InterContinental Hong Kong.

The day’s activities were organized with the support and participation of the Osteoporosis Society of Hong Kong (OSHK) and the Hong Kong Osteoporosis Foundation (HKOF) and were attended by some 50 print and broadcast journalists from Hong Kong and other parts of Asia.

The conference began with IOF CEO Daniel Navid officially welcoming participants and introducing the day’s speakers: Professor Annie Kung, president of OSHK, Dr Edith Lau, president of HKOF, Dr Anthony Kwok, honorary secretary of HKOF, and Mr Paul Spencer Sochaczewski, head of IOF Communications. Mrs Alice Chiu, China Representative of the 2nd IOF Women Leaders Roundtable, and founder and director of the Sheen Hok Charitable Foundation, Hong Kong, also attended.

Professor Kung spoke about preventing osteoporosis in Asia and discussed how the disease’s prevalence continues to rise, the health and economic burden it poses, and the importance of early prevention and detection.

Dr Lau spoke about the link between food, key nutrients and healthy bones, as well as the impact of diet on osteoporosis prevention and treatment.

Global launch initiatives for the WOD 2006 “Bone Appétit” campaign were covered by Paul Sochaczewski, who introduced the popular report, public service announcements, and posters produced for CNS members around the world to help in their osteoporosis awareness and educational campaigns. Mr Sochaczewski also officially launched the new IOF website and presented the new website section on food and nutrition.

Dr Kwok familiarized the media with local Hong Kong WOD initiatives including a scientific symposium, a Bone Appétit carnival, and a Charity Gala Dinner, held on the evening of 19 October and hosted by Mrs Alice Chiu of the Sheen Hok Charitable Foundation and attended by some 400 guests to help raise funds for IOF Asia campaign.

A cooking demonstration and “bone-friendly” lunch was then hosted by Executive Sous Chef Tsui Kit Po of the InterContinental Hong Kong, featuring dishes created by Chef Po exclusively around the “Bone Appétit” theme. Dishes included kale mousse with crabmeat sauce; seared beef strip loin with a soya glaze; braised tofu with honey-roasted pumpkin and bok choy; and for dessert, apricot whip; and almond and sesame pudding with roasted figs. Some of these recipes are available on the new IOF “bone-friendly” recipe database.

A menu reference guide provided lunch participants with details on the calcium and vitamin D content of the menu ingredients.

The conference resulted in excellent media coverage including an interview on CNBC Market Watch with IOF President and Board member Professor Pierre D. Delmas; on Star World News Asia with IOF General Secretary Professor Jean-Yves Reginster; and with Dr Edith Lau on TVB Jade. These interviews provided coverage of osteoporosis issues and initiatives including the importance of a healthy, calcium-rich diet and exercise in helping to prevent the disease.

The event was supported by unrestricted educational grants from IOF's four Global Gold WOD 2006 sponsors: MSD, Novartis, Fonterra and Tetra Pak.

First Asia-wide advertising campaign promoting action against osteoporosis in Hong Kong.

In conjunction with World Osteoporosis Day activities, the first Asia-wide advertising campaign promoting action against osteoporosis was on October 18, 2004 in Hong Kong. Hong Kong based osteoporosis societies, including the Osteoporosis Society of Hong Kong, supported the event.

The campaign, prepared by International Osteoporosis Foundation and its 24 member societies in Asia, urges women to take control of their bone health by taking the "IOF One Minute Osteoporosis Risk Test".

The advertising will appear on television and in print.
In the 30-second public service announcement, the form of one mannequin, representing the one in three women over 50 who will get osteoporosis, suffers the three most common osteoporosis fractures – wrist, spine and hip.

Leading TV stations throughout the region have agreed to broadcast the TV spot without charge.

Speaking at the launch, Prof. Annie Kung, president of Osteoporosis Society Hong Kong, urged people to take responsibility for their bone health by taking the IOF One Minute Risk Test. She said, "Osteoporotic fractures often result in a loss of productivity and mobility. Only by regularly checking our bone density can we Asian women be sure we will be able to retain our independence. The TV spot will alert women throughout Asia that they can easily find out if they are at risk of osteoporosis by taking the risk test."

The film and the campaign's coordination and launch were realized through services donated by agencies within the Interpublic Group of Companies.
