Staying Power: Closing The Adherence Gap In Osteoporosis

This section of the IOF website has been developed to help healthcare professionals explore why so many patients fail to take treatment correctly and stay on treatment for the required length of time - known as ‘adherence'. Adherence is defined as patients taking treatment correctly (compliance) and continuing to take treatment for the recommended amount of time (persistence on therapy).
In addition to the 'Staying Power' report which highlights the international evidence on the impact of non-adherence, we've also provided a list of hints/tips and downloadable tools (below ) to help you encourage your patients to stay on treatment.
Staying Power: Healthcare Professionals Questions Guide
Although evidence suggests many people with osteoporosis stop taking their medication, it can be difficult to establish exactly why. IOF has worked with a number of healthcare professionals to develop a questions guide to help you discuss adherence with your patients.

Staying Power: Patient Flyer
We know people with osteoporosis often find it difficult to stay on their treatment and this poses a serious problem for both doctors and patients. When patients are first diagnosed with a chronic condition like osteoporosis, it is important they know that it is not unusual to find staying on long-term treatment a challenge and there is support available to help them overcome any difficulties.
To reassure patients they are not alone if they experience adherence problems, download a copy of the flyer and give it to your new osteoporosis patients along with their prescription.
