Orthopaedic Surgeons Initiative

Enabling orthopaedic surgeons to prevent future fractures

Educational slide kit for orthopaedic surgeons

This teaching slide kit was produced in partnership by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), the International Society for Fracture Repair (ISFR) and the Bone and Joint Decade (BJD) as a component of the Orthopaedic Surgeons Initiative.

The objective is to improve the management of patients with fragility fractures, to provide patients with both an evaluation of their bone mass density, and with appropriate pharmacological and non pharmacological treatment. Orthopaedic surgeons are often the first health professionals to diagnose fragility fractures. For this reason it is essential that they are knowledgeable about osteoporosis and recognize the importance of referring patients with osteoporosis to an appropriate bone specialist.

The slide kit can be downloaded free of charge in four languages. Click on the links below to download the material* as PowerPoint or PDF files:

Information about the Orthopaedic Surgeons Initiative

The Orthopaedic Surgeons Initiative of the IOF, ISFR and the BJD aims to help raise osteoporosis awareness among these specialists and provide clear clinical pathways for fragility fracture patients after the first fracture occurs. In addition to the above slide kit (also available on one CD-Rom for distribution at meetings) the partner organizations will help organize symposia and workshop to be hosted by the most influential orthopaedic societies worldwide. Secondly, research projects related to this initiative - such as fracture registries, studies on bone healing in fragility fracture patients receiving osteoporosis treatments, and other related issues, will be developed and implemented in several countries. IOF will implement this educational program in 2007-2008.
