European guidance for the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women

Recently, there have been significant advances in the field of osteoporosis management. A new, simple, WHO-validated method of assessing fracture risk has been developed, as have new treatments that have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of fractures at vulnerable sites. Against this background, the European Society for Clinical and Economic Evaluation of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO), in collaboration with the IOF, has developed new guidelines (see below) and has also published a practical summary in "pocket" format in five languages, available here. Please note that the management algorithms are based on a health economic analysis applied to the epidemiology of fracture in the UK and may require adaptation for other European countries.
