"We are delighted to welcome such a large and diverse audience of health professionals from the Middle East and other regions around the world,” said IOF President and Meeting Co-Chair John A. Kanis. “Osteoporosis and related fractures, as well as musculoskeletal diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and sarcopenia, are a major cause of disability and mortality in the Middle East, as elsewhere in the world. It is therefore critically important that health professionals learn about the latest advances in the prevention and management of these diseases.”

International and regional experts will share the latest clinical knowledge and new research on prevention strategies, diagnostic methods, and treatment options for osteoporosis and related diseases. The Meeting programme will include 17 plenary lectures, 12 Meet-the-Expert sessions, two Roundtables on orthopaedics and markers of bone turnover, four Satellite Symposia, as well as numerous oral and poster presentations.

Opening Ceremony of IOF Regionals Jordan '12Dr. Basel Masri, Co-Chair of the Meeting, stated, “We are especially pleased that this event is now CME accredited by both the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the Jordanian Medical Council.  In addition to practical clinical knowledge, it offers an international platform for regional research and is an excellent opportunity for experts to present their both research and exchange ideas related to future projects.”

Meeting abstracts have been published in a supplement issue of ‘Osteoporosis International’, the leading clinical research journal in the field. Five IOF Young Investigator Awards will also be presented to the five highest ranking abstracts by researchers aged 40 or under.

Dr. Elias Saba, Co-Chair of the Meeting and President of the Palestinian Osteoporosis Prevention Society, commented, “We know that there will be an enormous and costly increase in the number of fragility fractures in the region in the coming decades. Hopefully, the new knowledge gained over the next four days will help delegates take the necessary clinical steps towards the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and related diseases in their patients.”
