FRAX is a scientifically validated risk assessment tool, endorsed by the World Health Organization and now integrated into an increasing number of national osteoporosis guidelines around the world. It is a major milestone in helping health professionals to improve identification of patients at high risk of fracture. The web-based FRAX calculator assesses the ten-year risk of osteoporosis fracture based on individual risk factors, with or without BMD values. IOF supports the maintenance and development of the tool and promotes its worldwide use.

A newly launched FRAX Desktop application can be downloaded to any personal computer where it operates without internet access.
Two convenient subscription models are available at http://who-frax.org/index.php
This individual entry system mimics the front end of the current web version of FRAX. It can be used to assess an unlimited number of individual patients in any healthcare setting. The license can run for six or twelve months (download will expire after the subscription period). Each time the license is renewed, the subscriber receives the updated version of FRAX.
License fees* are CHF 25 for 6 months / CHF 45 for 12 months.
This version of FRAX is designed for researchers and handles multi-patient entries (analyses of large cohorts) in a single operation. The license is for a period of one month.
Please consult http://who-frax.org/index.php for license fees* and further details.
*License fees have been applied in order to cover the maintenance costs of the websites and the development of future versions of FRAX. Use of the online FRAX tool remains free of charge.

Companies may request the FRAX® Calculator Wheel to be produced for a specific country with their logo, in addition to IOF, FRAX®, WHO and University of Sheffield logos. IOF will supply a PDF file with the artwork, including the paper specifications and the FRAX® algorithm for the specific country. The company prints one sample and sends it to IOF for approval. If applicable, the company is responsible for the translation and will have to send it to IOF together with a validation by an official translation bureau stating that the translation is accurate. The calculator wheel will be produced under a one-year license agreement for unlimited printing.
Please contact the FRAX Coordinator for applicable costs
The IOF and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) established a joint Task Force that met in November 2011 for the ‘ISCD IOF FRAX Initiative’ meeting. The objective was to make recommendations on how to improve FRAX and better inform clinicians using the tool. ATTENTION iPHONE APP USERS (before April 2014)
The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) released a new version of the FRAX® App on April 2nd, 2014 which improves the user experience for the new Apple iOS (operating system) and integrates essential upgrades to the algorithm, new country data and language support. The project was assigned to a new developer and IOF has been working tirelessly with the previous App developers to find a solution to migrate all existing users into the new platform at no extra cost.
Unfortunately, we could not reach an agreement with the previous developers and regret to inform you that if you are a current user, you will have to download the new App if you:
- would like to have the most up-to-date data
- if your country is not on the list and you are waiting for its data to be added to the calculation tool
- you would like to use the app in a language other than English
- you would like to receive any type of support on the App
We will no longer be able to provide support to users who downloaded the App through our previous developers, versions 1.x through 3.x, as those versions were developed in an environment which we do not have access to. Furthermore, those versions will no longer be available in the App Store.
IOF apologizes for any inconvenience caused and would like to reassure you that every effort was made to try and avoid this situation. From this point on, all IOF mobile applications will be managed and maintained by IOF to ensure this does not happen again. We hope you will see the benefit of upgrading to the new version of the App.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We'll keep you posted as soon as version 4.0 is on the App store, around the first week of April 2014.
