Regional Audits

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is commited to addressing the local needs of regions worldwide. This includes the development of five IOF geographic regions as well as the publication of landmark regional epidemiological audits, and their launch at major regional scientific meetings.

The most recent IOF Audit, published on May 24, 2012, is the Latin America Audit: Epidemiology, Costs and Burden of Osteoporosis. Previously, regional audits were published for the Middle East and Africa (2011), Eastern European and Central Asia (2010),  Asia (2009) and Europe (2008).

These audits have been extremely useful tools for the societies and scientists in their respective countries, and have been far reaching and effective in increasing awareness at the political and public level.

The regional audits assess current and projected disease burden, and identify gaps in knowledge and care, relevant to osteoporosis in that region. They often underscores the scarcity of data available, and the need for large population-based cohorts and national databases and registries, to accurately assess major osteoporosis outcomes in many countries.
