Ambrish Mithal

Dr Ambrish Mithal is presently the Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes division at Medanta, the Medicity, Gurgaon, Delhi NCR.

Dr Mithal is the Chairperson, Bone and Joint Decade, India and immediate past President, Endocrine Society of India (2009-2010). He is the founder, past President and currently Chief Advisor to the Indian Society Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR). He chairs the Nutrition Working Group of the Committee of Scientific Advisors, International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).

In this capacity he has (co)authored two major papers- the ‘Global Vitamin D Status’ review and ‘Vitamin D recommendations for older adults’, both published in Osteoporosis International (2009 and 2010).

Dr Mithal has also authored the Asian Audit, an unique IOF publication (2009) which attempts, for the first time, to document the status of osteoporosis in 14 Asian countries and suggests priorities for policy change. He directed the IOF initiative for physician awareness (targeted support) in India (2005-2007) Dr Mithal established India’s first DXA system and bone health program in 1997, and has been on the WHO Global Task Force for Osteoporosis.

Ambrish Mithal has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. Prominent among these are the NIH Fogarty fellowship, Harvard Medical School (characterization of the calcium receptor), JICA fellowship, Japan (bone densitometry), Boy Frame award of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (Adult Working Group) in 2004, IOF Amgen Health Professionals Award (for ISBMR) in 2005, and various awards and citations from the Indian Medical Association from time to time, including Doctor of the year in 2005.

His major current areas of research are vitamin D nutrition and supplementation strategies, and
osteoporosis in India. He has published substantially in these areas.
