Beat the Break: Know and Reduce Your Osteoporosis Risk Factors

Beat the Break: Know and reduce your osteoporosis risk factorsThis report describes the common risk factors, both modifiable and fixed, that place people at greater risk of osteoporosis. One of the main messages of the report is that people can take action to reduce any negative lifestyle factors (termed “modifiable risk factors”) such as smoking, excessive alcohol use, poor nutrition, lack of exercise etc. The report also shows that, although fixed risk factors such as age, family history and gender, can’t be changed, there are strategies that can lessen their effect.

Professor Cyrus Cooper, a leading expert in the field who has authored the report, stated, “We now know that worldwide one woman in three and one man in five over fifty will experience an osteoporotic fracture. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If people recognize osteoporosis risk factors when they are young and take appropriate action, it can have enormous positive impact on their bone health in later years.”
