Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, China on March 19, 2008 International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) CEO Daniel Navid said that IOF hopes to strengthen its relations with China in working towards osteoporosis prevention and treatment. He noted that China, with the world’s largest population of osteoporosis patients, can play an important role in the world campaign against this disease, which mainly affects elderly people.

IOF signed a cooperation agreement with the China Health Promotion Foundation (CHPF) on the same day. According to the agreement the two foundations will cooperate in the field of osteoporosis prevention, treatment and research, as well as the promotion of public awareness of this disease in China. The President of the CHPF Dr. Bai Shuzhong said, "We attach great importance to the cooperation with IOF...Osteoporosis has become a public health concern of the Chinese government and the Chinese people. Osteoporosis prevention and treatment is a major part of the work of the CHPF, which has set up a subcommittee on osteoporosis."

During the press conference, which was attended by journalists representing some 100 print media and three TV stations, IOF and CHPF jointly launched the China IOF Media Awards to encourage Chinese journalists to pay more attention to this disease.

Mr. Navid also welcomed Tongjitang, a Chinese traditional medicine company, to the IOF’s Committee of Corporate Advisors (CCA). Mr. Navid thanked the company for its support and said, “By actively participating in this dynamic IOF group of international companies, and by helping IOF to carry out major public awareness, educational and scientific projects, Tonjjitang can make an important contribution to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in China and around the world.”

Mr. Wang Xiaochun, CEO of Tongjitang, expressed his thanks to IOF saying he felt honoured to be the first Chinese company to become a member of the IOF Committee of Corporate Advisors. He mentioned that, together with CHPF, Tongjitang launched a "Silk-Ribbon Campaign" for osteoporosis prevention and treatment two years ago. The hope is that with IOF cooperation even more people can benefit from this awareness raising campaign.
