IOF is pleased to announce the election of Professor Jean-Yves Reginster of Belgium as the new Chair of the Committee of National Societies (CNS) and the re-election of Dr. Famida Jiwa as Chair of the Patient Societies Sub Committee, beginning in January 2013. IOF extends its thanks to the outgoing Chair, Professor José Zanchetta, for his contributions over the past two years.
The CNS is a core membership group within IOF, bringing together 209 national patient and medical societies from countries, regions and territories around the world. Patient Societies within the CNS form the Patient Society Sub-Committee, which unanimously re-elected Dr. Famida Jiwa of Canada as Chair.
Jean-Yves Reginster is Professor of Epidemiology, Public Health and Health Economics at the University of Liège, Belgium. He is also President of the Department of Public Health Sciences and Director of the Bone and Cartilage Research Unit at the University Hospital of Liège. Professor Reginster has authored more than 600 publications, mainly dedicated to the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis, epidemiology of osteoporosis and arthritis, health economics, clinical management of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Among his other professional activities, Professor Reginster is President of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO), General Secretary of the Belgium Bone Club, and President of the Group for the Respect of Ethics and Excellence in Sciences (GREES). As a founding member of the IOF Board and IOF General Secretary from 1998 to 2007, Professor Reginster was awarded the prestigious Pierre Delmas Award in 2009 in acknowledgement of his significant contributions to IOF.
Famida Jiwa is currently President and CEO of Osteoporosis Canada. She holds a Masters Degree in Health Administration from the University of Toronto and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Dr. Jiwa was the former Provincial Osteoporosis Coordinator charged with rolling out all aspects of the annual Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy and a former Program Consultant for the Acute Services Division of the Ministry of Health.
