Latin America Regional Audit

The Latin America Regional Audit: Epidemiology, costs and burden of osteoporosis in 2012

This Audit assesses current and projected disease burden in the region and identifies gaps in data, knowledge and care relevant to osteoporosis in Latin America. In almost all of the 14 countries included in this Audit, the scarcity of solid data and the lack of national databases and fracture registries is a common scenario. Even with the lack of robust epidemiological information for many countries, this report represents the first comprehensive assessment of osteoporosis in the region.

The report was launched on May 24, 2012 at the opening of the IOF Regionals - 1st Latin America Osteoporosis Meeting held in São Paulo, Brazil.

Findings Include:

  • The majority of the countries represented in the audit can expect at least a doubling if not a tripling of their 70 and over populations by the year 2050.
  • Osteoporosis guidelines are available in nine of the 14 countries, but with the exception of Bolivia and Cuba, none are government approved.
  • Access to DXA machines for the diagnosis of osteoporosis is limited to urban areas and private clinics in the majority of the countries in the region.
  • There is a general lack of prevalence data on osteopenia, osteoporosis and fracture rates.
  • Available evidence reveals an abundance of vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency throughout Latin America.
  • Access to diagnostics and care, as well as reimbursement, is highly variable, particularly in regard to urban versus rural settings.

A primary recommendation of this report is the need for more research to gather the necessary evidence that would aid health authorities to develop comprehensive healthcare policies at all levels.
