Hajime Orimo

Professor Hajime Orimo M.D., Ph.D. is the President of the Japan Osteoporosis Foundation and Board Member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. He is also the Chairman of Kenkoin Medical Corporation Foundation and Chief Director of the Kenkoin Clinic.

After graduating from the University of Tokyo, Prof. Orimo joined the Department of Geriatric Medicine of the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine in 1964. After two years as post-doctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina, he became the head physician of geriatric medicine, then associate professor in 1982 and the professor in 1986. After his university career, he has been a director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital in 1997, and then was the president of Health Science University for seven years from 2003. As a leading authority on geriatric medicine, Prof. Orimo's specific research interest is geriatric medicine and treatment of osteoporosis, calcium metabolism and arteriosclerosis.He introduced calcitonin and active vitamin D therapy in Japan. He also conducted several clinical trials with postmenopausal osteoporosis women in Japan. His major contribution in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in Japan was establishing the diagnosis criterion of osteoporosis in 1996 and the first Japanese practice guidelines on osteoporosis in 1998, which were updated several times.The current diagnosis criterion and Japanese guidelines for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis were updated in 2012 and 2015, respectively with organizing the developing committees. He also has done the national survey for hip fracture incidence in Japan since 1987 and updated the survey every five years, the most recent in 2012. He was member of the Science Council of Japan from 2000 to 2006. He received several awards: Presidential Award of International Association of Gerontology in 1993, Award of Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research in 1994, Award of British Geriatrics Society in 1997, Japan Medical Association award of merit in 1998 and Award of Ohshima Prize in the Atherosclerosis Research in 2000.

Prof. Orimo serves on the Editorial Board of Aging-clinical and Experimental Research, Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, Osteoporosis Japan, Journal of Arteriosclerosis and Thrombosis. He is the emeritus Editor-in-Chief of Geriatrics Gerontology International.
