IOF Medal of Achievement awarded to Professor Eugene McCloskey

Prof. Eugene McCloskey wins IOF Medal of Achievement
International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) recognizes UK researcher for original and outstanding achievements in the field of osteoporosis.

Today, at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, Eugene McCloskey, Professor of Adult Bone Diseases at the University of Sheffield Metabolic Bone Centre was awarded the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Medal of Achievement.

The IOF Medal of Achievement is presented annually by IOF to honour an individual researcher who has significantly advanced the field of osteoporosis through his original and outstanding scientific contributions. The award underlines important aspects of IOF’s mission – to increase understanding and awareness of osteoporosis and to promote medical innovation and improved care.

Professor Cyrus Cooper, Chair of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, presented the award, stating

Eugene McCloskey is an acknowledged expert in the fields of vertebral fracture definition, osteoporosis epidemiology as well as non-invasive assessments of bone strength and fracture risk. His experience in the field has been of great value to the International Osteoporosis Foundation and to the greater osteoporosis community as a whole.”

Professor McCloskey has worked in the field of calcium and bone disorders since 1986. He has contributed to the development of the FRAX tool for estimating fracture risk and the National Osteoporosis Guidance Group (NOGG). Professor McCloskey is President of the Bone Research Society, a Board member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, the Sheffield Director of the Centre for Integrated Research in Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA), Chair of the NOGG Implementation Committee and a member of the National Specialty Group for Musculoskeletal Diseases. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and reviews.
