More than 60 health professionals took part in this key IOF-ISCD training course held in Beirut in November 2015. It was among the 27 Osteoporosis Essentials courses held in 16 countries in 2015.

The Calcium Metabolism and Osteoporosis Program and the Lebanese Society of Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases, OSTEOS, hosted the second Osteoporosis Essentials: Diagnosis, Densitometry and Management course in Beirut, Lebanon, on November 25-26, 2015.

Held the second time within three years in Lebanon, the Beirut course was attended by over 60 physicians and technicians from various major centers in Beirut and around the country. The local Faculty - all dedicated experts in the field - had launched such courses back in 1999 and offered the first ISCD densitometry certification in the region, going on to hold additional similar training events over the past 16 years.

After a first common morning session the group split into parallel sessions for physicians and technicians. At the end of the course attendees had the opportunity to take an on-line test and receive a Certificate of Attestation and/or to register for a proctored exam at a testing facility in Beirut to become an ISCD CCD (Certified Clinical Densitometrist) or an ISCD CDT(Certified Densitometry Technologist). The latter certifications, markers of quality services by concerned densitometry providers, are valid for five years and can be renewed at testing centers.

The one and a half-day Osteoporosis Essentials course, a joint educational initiative of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD), aims to advance knowledge and quality of osteoporosis diagnosis and care by concerned providers around the world. As well as providing the latest practical knowledge, the course offers the opportunity for participants to earn an optional Certificate of Attestation. Since its launch in March 2013 the course has been held 92 times and trained close to 4500 participants worldwide. In 2015 alone the course was held in 15 countries.
