Journalists and VIPS were invited to the official launch of the IOF Latin American Office in Buenos Aires on April 18, 2007. The office is headed by IOF’s three Latin American board members, Professors J. Zanchetta (Argentina). G. Riera-Espinoza (Venezuela) and Dr. R. Lederman (Brazil). It will be responsible for fundraising and the implementation of IOF’s ambitious Latin American Program. The program, to be carried out throughout the region, emphasizes science and physician training, patient support, and communications.

Some 250 persons attended the day’s impressive program of events which included an imaginative media seminar followed by a gala fundraising dinner for 160 people. The occasion was also used to launch a new IOF Latin American Journalists Award scheme.

Organized as a television-style entertainment program and hosted by Dr. Claudio Zin, a well-known TV journalist, the day’s events began with a bone friendly buffet lunch. Latin American members of IOF’s Committee of Scientific Advisors then presented information on different aspects of osteoporosis and IOF CEO Daniel Navid outlined IOF programs.

The action-packed event, punctuated by the repeated appearance of a comedian, featured celebrity chefs to underline the importance of bone-healthy nutrition, and an exercise demonstration to show the importance of exercise for bone health. The audience was captivated by a demonstration of common fractures via body painting on a model, and by the osteoporosis patients who told their stories and then modeled in a patient fashion show. IOF informational brochures in Spanish were widely distributed.

IOF’s Latin American Office staff organized the events with the expert assistance of many ‘IOF Angels’ – a group of dedicated volunteers who contributed their time and energy to making the launch and fundraising dinner a great success.

The media impact of the launch event was considerable with some 15 articles appearing in the most important national newspapers, as well as scientific and women’s magazines. News about the event was broadcast on four national TV stations and four national radio stations.
