The Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Initiative, a major new tool to help orthopaedic surgeons better diagnose and treat osteoporosis, has now been translated into French and Italian.

The slide kit, first launched in English in May 2007, has been available on CD for distribution at major orthopaedic conferences and workshops. CDs in all three languages may be ordered for bulk distribution at conferences upon special request through IOF. The slide kit can also be downloaded from the IOF website.

Participants of the annual SOFCOT meeting, held from November 6-8, 2007 in Paris, were the first to receive the French-language took kit, which was distributed at the IOF and SOFCOT booths. The educational training package consists of four in-depth lectures plus one summary lecture and suggested materials for use in doctors’ offices.

“Orthopaedic surgeons have a critical role to play in diagnosing and treating osteoporosis,” stated Dr. Nansa Burlet, IOF Science Manager. “Orthopaedic surgeons are at the front line of fracture care - they are most often the first to see patients. But it is not enough to just repair the fracture. By referring patients to an osteoporosis specialist, they can ensure that the underlying disease is diagnosed and appropriate care is received by the patient in order to prevent future fractures.”

The Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Initiative materials were developed by three major organizations fighting osteoporosis worldwide – International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), International Society for Fracture Repair (ISFR), and the Bone and Joint Decade (BJD).
