Orthopedic Surgeons' Training Kit

This training slide kit was produced in partnership by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), the International Society for Fracture Repair (ISFR) and the Bone and Joint Decade (BJD) as a component of the Orthopaedic Surgeons Initiative.

Orthopedic Surgeons' Training KitThe objective is to improve the management of patients with fragility fractures, to provide patients with both an evaluation of their bone mass density, and with appropriate pharmacological and non pharmacological treatment. Orthopaedic surgeons are often the first health professionals to diagnose fragility fractures. For this reason it is essential that they are knowledgeable about osteoporosis and recognize the importance of referring patients with osteoporosis to an appropriate bone specialist.

Information about the Orthopaedic Surgeons Initiative

The Orthopaedic Surgeons Initiative of the IOF, ISFR and BJD aims to raise osteoporosis awareness among specialists and provide clear clinical pathways for fragility fracture patients after the first fracture occurs. In addition to the above slide kit (also available on one CD-Rom for distribution at meetings) the partner organizations organize symposia and workshops, which are hosted by orthopaedic societies worldwide.

Research projects related to this initiative - such as fracture registries, studies on bone healing in fragility fracture patients receiving osteoporosis treatments, and other related issues, are being developed and implemented in several countries.
