In Argentina, following the success of the July 19th "Strengthen Your Bones" workshop, aimed at beneficiaries of the Instituto Autárquico de la Obra Social Provincial (IAPOS) in the city of Santa Fe, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), met with the Minister of Health, Sonia Martorano, and her team at the Ministry. The meeting also saw the participation of medical professionals, experts in bone health, representatives of the industry, and provincial social workers. The main objective was to recognize osteoporosis as a priority on the provincial health agenda.

Lic. Mónica Calo, regional manager of IOF LATAM, presented the LATAM Audit 2021 report "Epidemiology, cost and impact of osteoporosis and fragility fractures in Latin America", which includes impactful data on the prevalence of the disease at a regional and national level. It is estimated that by the year 2030, the Argentine population over the age of 50 will reach 16.5 million people, increasing to 19.1 million in 2050. This demography will comprise 46% men and 54% women. As life expectancy at birth continues to rise, it will be challenged by the combination of insufficient healthcare resources and the rise in age-related chronic diseases such as osteoporosis. These circumstances will create a situation of significant impact on the Argentine health system. In this context, during the meeting, the prevailing need to increase public awareness about osteoporosis was emphasized,

The meeting undoubtedly marked an important step towards promoting bone health as a priority on the public health agenda. At IOF we believe that multisectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration is key to addressing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis in an effective and comprehensive manner, thereby ensuring a healthier future for all people.
